Spikey Pineapple
10-12 Count Per Culture
Spiky Pineapple Isopods, scientifically known as Cristarmadillidium muricatum, are small, unique isopods native to Spain. Here's some info about them:
Appearance and Characteristics:
They have a light yellow to washed-out orange color with distinctive spikes all over their bodies, resembling a pineapple.
They are one of the smallest isopod species, growing up to 8mm in length.
They are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night and in the early mornings.
They have the ability to roll into a ball when they sense danger, a common defense mechanism for isopods.
Habitat and Care:
Spiky Pineapple Isopods prefer dry and arid environments with plenty of ventilation, mimicking their natural habitat in Spain.
While they prefer drier conditions, they still need some moisture. Sphagnum moss can be used to retain moisture in their enclosure.
They require a well-ventilated enclosure to thrive.
They are considered a somewhat challenging species to care for, making them more suitable for experienced isopod keepers.
Diet:
As detritivores, they consume decaying organic matter like leaves and wood.
In captivity, their diet can be supplemented with vegetables, protein sources (like fish food or dried shrimp), and calcium sources (like cuttlebone or limestone).
Breeding:
They are moderate breeders and tend to breed year-round when provided with proper care and conditions.
Other Names:
They are also sometimes referred to as Crystal Pineapple Isopods or European Spiny Isopods.
